Good morning Lenspiration!
This week, we need photos to backdrop 1st Peter 3:15.
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:”
Your submitted photos will be used as a background to the verse as part of our VersePics Ministry. As I was meditating on this verse, the images I thought of varied greatly depending on what part of the verse I focused on. If I looked at sanctifying my heart, I thought of prayer, Bibles, ect… If I looked at the second part, I thought of preaching, speaking to others (group or friend shots), and images of the hope that we have in Christ! (Mostly epic landscapes.) Those are just some ideas for submissions, but if you think you have a photo or an idea that would fit this verse better, fantastic! I’m open to any ideas that you might have, and that’s the whole idea behind Sharpening Character’s partnership with Lenspiration anyway!
Instead of the usual twenty paragraphs or so of legalese I tend to find in many STS Requests, I wrote up some (very short) helpful stuff on submission rules and on any other questions you might have about this, and posted it as a new sticky post to the STS forum. For convenience sake, here’s a link! I’d encourage PRO members who have participated in the VersePic Opportunities before to read through it as well, as I’ve switched up everything to make life easier for all of us!
I need all the submissions you can give me by the 31st of March! Essentially, this Opportunity will be closed to submissions midnight on Friday. I know, it is kind of short notice, but I promise we will be rolling longer deadlines out very soon! Try and bear with me in the meantime…
Thank you for all your help and support as we follow God’s leading in the ministry he has given us!
Ben

March 27, 2017 at 11:13 pm #22408Benjamin HolmesModeratorNow, for most of you, you probably have absolutely no idea who we at Sharpening Character are, what we do, what a VersePic is, or what the images are really needed for! Understandable, and absolutely unforgivable! 😉 Seriously though, I’d encourage you to check out our website before you start submitting so you can both discover what the Lord has been doing in our lives with this amazing ministry that he’s given us, and so that you can get a feel for what your submissions will be used for! I’m going to give some examples below that should help, but I’d still encourage you to take a look at the website. You can find us at http://www.sharpeningcharacter.com, and if you’d like to go directly to our VersePics ministry page, you’ll find it at http://www.sharpeningcharacter.com/versepics.
I hope seeing some of the examples below will give you an idea of what your images will be used for and how to shoot for us!
Here’s an example of an orginal submission for a VPO:
And this is the finished VersePic! Note the Lenspiration Watermark and name attribution on the bottom right.
Just one more photo, I promise! After this, I want to see your photos! 🙂 This example shows you what VersePics are used for, on an iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.
Just to mention it, I make a square and a 4:3 version of every VersePic, and you’re seeing the square “Phone” versions on these phones. The Tablet version (seen above) is used for tablets, desktops, and anything with a wider screen.
I hope this helps you! I can’t wait to see what you guys are able to come up with!

March 28, 2017 at 11:22 am #22445PeanutParticipantMarch 28, 2017 at 1:03 pm #22478Benjamin HolmesModeratorThank you for being the first submitter Peanut!
About the photo though, while it is a nice picture of the Grand Canyon, for me, it also has absolutely nothing to do with 1st Peter 3:15, which is the whole point of the VPO’s…
The goal of submitting is to find a subject and a mood in a photo that corresponds to the verse. For me, that photo just doesn’t make me think of 1st Peter 3:15, and that’s a major issue for me, meaning I could not use that photo. Sorry about that…
March 28, 2017 at 6:54 pm #22495James StaddonKeymaster@peanut do you have any morning landscape shots with a sun bursting over the horizon? Perhaps that that would portray “hope” better?
March 29, 2017 at 7:42 am #22502Austin VinarParticipantMarch 29, 2017 at 7:38 pm #22542James StaddonKeymasterWe shall soon see if @bensharpeningcharacter will be able to use these. When composing your landscape shots, seek to simplify the scene. Do what you can to not include the branches draping down from above, sticking out from below or leaning in on the side. Include only one set of tracks in the snow instead of several undefined trails. Looks like a pretty cool place to take pictures! Beautiful time of day too.
March 30, 2017 at 10:49 am #22546Kimberly SnyderParticipantMarch 30, 2017 at 11:08 am #22549Benjamin HolmesModeratorOOOOOOO!!!! I really like that photos of the woman looking out over the river! The blues of the river, mountains, and sky contrast really well with all the yellow leaves! The subject is also almost perfectly off center to use in a VersePic too… 🙂 Well, I think we have enough landscape shots now for me to choose from, so let’s move the focus now to some of the other ideas of the verse I mentioned. Images of prayer, speaking, or groups talking anyone? Feel free to come up with your own ideas for subjects as well!
March 31, 2017 at 9:27 am #22596Benjamin HolmesModeratorJust wanted to give a thank you shout-out to Caitlin Compton for submitting 6 DNG submissions on reading the bible and prayer via the DFR! If you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, go look at the FAQ that we have for the VPOs! You’ll find it at the top of the STS forum. Rounding out the table of submissions at the moment, but there is always room for more! The deadline ends tonight!
April 1, 2017 at 3:09 pm #22613Benjamin HolmesModeratorOK! I’ve got all the submissions, and I’ll be working on the VersePic here shortly! Below is a collage of all the submissions I recieved… (I recieved 6 DNG’s by the DFR, with 3 of them slight variations. I only show one of each scene here.)
Updates will be posted shortly as to the winner, and the finished VersePic will be shown here before its public release on the VersePic gallery at our website!
Thank you all!
April 2, 2017 at 2:24 pm #22618Benjamin HolmesModeratorGood evening Lenspiration!
I want to thank you all for the submissions I received and the support you are giving us!
Caitlin Compton has stolen the prize for this VersePic Opportunity with her fantastic submission featuring a girl reading her bible! Her original submission and the finished VersePic will be shown below.
Before we get to that though, I do want to make a comment.
THE COMMENT! 😂 Caitlin submitted a DNG RAW file to me via the DFR, and if you have a RAW file, I’d highly appreciate if you would submit that way! RAW files offer huge benifits to the editor (me!) with all the extra information in the photo! And that extra information can come in seriously handy when I find I need to boost exposure dramatically so I don’t suffer from too much noise, when I brighten up shadows, and numerous other edits that would take forever to mention here. So, if you have a DNG or RAW file please use the DFR instead of submitting a JPEG here. That’s not to say I can’t or won’t use JPEGs, this is actually the first RAW file I’ve actually used in a VP, but rather it just offers me more flexibility!
FINALLY! 😄 On to the contest winner! 🙂
I really enjoy it when I get inspired and everything just falls into place! That doesn’t mean everything was super simple, but it does mean everything goes smoothly!
This photo was a FANTASTIC option for a graphic designer becuase of the “blank slate” in the photo’s middle, or the Bible! This shot (she submitted several others at different angles) is taken at just the right angle so that the Bible almost forms a bit of a diamond shape-wise that perfectly complements text with a frame. The fact that it was nicely uniform in color didn’t hurt either! Everything goes together well. There weren’t any overly saturated or unrealistic colors in the image, and even if there were any, since I had a RAW image I could have easily fixed it up in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for iOS. (Yes, there is such a thing, and it is FANTASTIC for editing RAW files!) As long as we are on the subject of editing, I also liked how Caitlin edited her image. I did edit the image myself in Lightroom to get a more balanced image and color over all, but I found that I liked the bright white of the paper in Caitlin’s shot better than the balanced readable pages in mine. I decided I would leave all of her editing intact and kept out of even making any small tweaks. (Just to mention it here, since Caitlin submitted a RAW file, all the changes were left intact and readable by Lightroom, letting me see the “true” original file along with all of her editing.)
As @creative-click-photography (Caitlin) is a PRO member, she will be recieving a $5 reward as a small thank you from Lenspiration! Caitlin, if you can email me at [email protected], I’ll get your money to you ASAP!
Thank you all, and I look forward to the next VPO that will be appearing soon!

VersePic Director for Sharpening CharacterApril 3, 2017 at 6:43 am #22619James StaddonKeymasterThis is so fantastic! Congratulations, @creative-click-photography!
As the STS winner, would you like to tell us a little about how you went about taking the photos you submitted? I would also love to see the “several other angles” to learn from them as well.
