I took my “new” Pentax K-5 coupled with the Pentax 50mm f/2 out to the woods the other day. I just love old, “fast” prime lenses! Anyway, my brother actually noticed this little mushroom and suggested that I photograph it. I’m sure glad he did!
Tech specs:
Shutter Speed: 1/40 sec.
Aperture: Unknown, I’m guessing it’s f/2 – 2.8
ISO speed: 500The reason I had the ISO speed so high is that it was a really cloudy day, and the woods were incredibly dark. But no problem, with the K-5 low noise, high ISO capabilities, I didn’t have to worry a bit!
EDIT: Here’s a second vertical one which everyone in my family seems to think is better.
What do you think? How could I have done better?

I like personally the first one best, although both are very good.November 12, 2014 at 10:20 am #8254James StaddonKeymasterFascinating. Minuscule is just the right adjective to describe it!
About your lens, do you know what your minimum focus distance is? It must be so much fun shooting with an f/2 aperture.
About the photo, I do tend to like the horizontal one better. The vertical one feels somehow static to me, the mushroom being in the center of the frame and a lot of empty bokeh (albeit beautifl bokeh) in the background. It’s sorta like the mushroom gets lost in the many interesting things there are to see in the picture. The horizontal one I dwell on the mushroom itself longer which is very good. I would zoom in (or maybe move in?) a little closer maybe, or just crop as the attachment suggests.
I love the color contrasts and the texture; and the depth created with having something in the foreground blurred out as well as something in the background. It’s amazing what intricate detail there is in an area that we could so easily just step on without a second thought!

I don’t really know what the MFD is for that lens, so I set up a little test with one of my new African bookmrks! I propped it up against my Bible, lit it with my pocket flashlight, and measured the distance! It looks to be about 14-16 inches from the front of the lens…
And just for fun, here’s the image you get, taken with the above setup.
That lens is just tack sharp! This was taken wide open at f/2! Here’s a 100% crop of that image.
